The Hidden Cost of Tariffs: How They're Affecting Small Businesses Like Mine

Running a small business is a labor of love. When I started my online boutique, I dreamed of curating beautiful, quality pieces for customers who appreciate style, creativity, and a personal touch. I’ve loved every second of sourcing unique products, connecting with customers, and watching this little shop grow. But lately, it’s become increasingly difficult to keep things running smoothly—and one major reason is tariffs.

Tariffs might sound like a distant policy issue, something that only affects large corporations or international trade giants. But in reality, they’re hitting small businesses like mine right where it hurts: our cost of goods.

Many of the supplies, accessories, and even finished products I source for the boutique come from overseas. With recent increases in tariffs on imported goods, the cost of getting these items to my studio has skyrocketed. We're not talking a few cents here and there—some materials have gone up by 100-145%. That’s a huge jump for a business that’s already operating on tight margins.

To make matters more complicated, the supply chain has become less reliable. Between delays at customs, rising freight costs, and manufacturers grappling with the same economic pressures, I’ve seen extended lead times and unexpected shortages. It's become a balancing act: trying to maintain the quality and uniqueness you’ve come to expect, while navigating a landscape that seems to shift every week.

Here’s the hard part to share: I’ve been doing everything I can to absorb these increased costs without raising prices. I know you work hard for your money, and I don’t take it lightly when you choose to spend it here. But as the cost of supplies and products continues to rise, it’s becoming harder and harder not to pass along at least a portion of that burden.

I wanted to be transparent because your support means everything. When you shop small, you’re not just buying a product—you’re helping me keep this dream alive, and that means the world. I’ll continue to do everything I can to source ethically, creatively, and affordably, but I hope you’ll understand if prices have to shift slightly in the coming months.

As always, thank you for being here. Your loyalty, kind messages, and repeat orders are what keep this boutique going. Together, we’ll get through these challenging times—one beautiful piece at a time.

With love and gratitude,
Nikki and Tom
